Anfänge und Wachstum
Murua begann im Jahr 2003, die ostafrikanische Literaturszene zu verfolgen. Zu dieser Zeit schien wenig zu passieren in Bezug auf die Dokumentation dessen, was afrikanische Schriftsteller taten. Im Jahr 2006 begann er auf einer Plattform namens Nairobiliving.com zu bloggen, die heute nicht mehr existiert. Hier dokumentierte er die Geschehnisse in Nairobi, aber da er schon eine Weile mit Schriftstellern zu tun hatte und sich des Mangels an fertigen Informationen über sie bewusst war, wollte er dieses Problem auf eigene Faust lösen. So kam es 2013 zur Gründung von Jamesmurua.com. Er benannte es nach sich selbst, damit er im Falle eines Scheiterns die Plattform immer noch für andere persönliche Dinge nutzen konnte. Das tat er nicht. Muruas Ziel mit dieser neuen Plattform war es, afrikanischen Schriftstellern, über die in den afrikanischen Mainstream-Medien kaum berichtet wird, Sichtbarkeit zu verschaffen. Er begann dieses Projekt, während er noch bei The Star angestellt war, wo er 5 Jahre lang als Redakteur und 9 Jahre lang als Kolumnist tätig war. Was anfangs wie eine Herausforderung erschien, war die Tatsache, dass Murua nur Englisch und Suaheli spricht, er aber über alle afrikanischen Schriftsteller berichten wollte, auch über die nicht englischsprachigen. Seine Plattform wurde jedoch gut angenommen und im Moment hat er über 2.100 Beiträge veröffentlicht, was eine enorme Leistung in Bezug auf die Berichterstattung über afrikanische Literatur ist. Mit über 17.000 Abonnenten gilt James Muruas Literatur-Blog mittlerweile als der führende Blog im Bereich der afrikanischen Literatur. Der Gründer ist seitdem zu Literaturfestivals im östlichen, westlichen und südlichen Afrika sowie in Übersee gereist. Außerdem hat Murua nebenbei einen Literatur-Podcast und einen YouTube-Kanal eingerichtet, beides mit dem Ziel, afrikanischen Schriftstellern eine Stimme zu geben. 
Die George-Floyd-Proteste und die Black-Lives-Matter-Bewegung
Seit kurzem berichtet James Murua in seinem Literatur-Blog über Schriftsteller afrikanischer Abstammung in aller Welt. Der Tod von George Floyd im Mai 2020 durch die Hand eines schurkischen, weißen Polizisten während seiner Verhaftung löste nicht nur Proteste in den USA und darüber hinaus aus, die diesen Vorfall verurteilten, sondern auch die Notwendigkeit, schwarze Brillanz mehr denn je hervorzuheben. In der Tat gibt es eine beunruhigende, minimale schwarze Präsentation in der Verlagsbranche in den USA und einen Bedarf an mehr Reportagen über die Literaturszene der afrikanischen Diaspora. James Murua Literature Blog will dem entgegenwirken, indem er neben den literarischen Nachrichten vom Kontinent auch die afrikanische Diaspora in seine Reportagen einbezieht.
Errungenschaften
Als Journalist wurde Murua 2009 aufgrund seiner Beiträge für die Zeitung The Star zum Kolumnisten des Jahres gewählt. Darüber hinaus hat er für eine Reihe von Medienpublikationen in ganz Afrika geschrieben. Im Jahr 2018 wurde er von der Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE) Awards für den “Best Creative Writing Blog” nominiert.
Im selben Jahr wurde er bei den kenianischen Sanaa Theatre Awards als bester Autor für Theater, Kunst und Kultur ausgezeichnet und anschließend als einer der Top Men in Digital in Kenia gelistet. Seitdem hat Murua Workshops zum Thema Blogging und Social Media in Kenia, Uganda, Tansania und Malawi geleitet. Er war auch als Medienberater für das Goethe Institut, Nairobi, tätig.

James Murua Literature Blog is a platform reporting on books, launches, literary festivals, author profiles and more started in 2013 by James Murua (pictured) in Nairobi, Kenya.
Beginnings and Growth
Murua first started keeping up with the East African Literary Scene in 2003. At the time, little seemed to be happening in terms of documenting what African Writers were up to. In 2006, he began blogging on a platform he named Nairobiliving.com that is now defunct. Here, he documented the happenings in Nairobi but since he had been around writers for a while and was aware of the lack of ready information on them, his intent was to solve this in his own capacity.
Hence the eventual birth of Jamesmurua.com in 2013. He proceeded to name it after himself so that in the eventuality that it failed, he could still use the platform for other personal stuff. It did not. Murua’s aim with this new platform was to give visibility to African writers rarely covered by the mainstream African media. He started this venture while still in employment at The Star where he worked as an Editor for 5 years and a Columnist for 9.

And probably what seemed like a challenge initially was the fact that Murua only speaks English and Swahili yet he wanted to cover all African writers including the non-English speakers. However, his platform was well received and at the moment, he has posted over 2,100 posts which is a huge achievement in terms of African Literature reportage.
With over 17,000 subscribers, James Murua Literature blog is now considered as the Leading blog in African Literature. As a result, the founder has since traveled to literary festivals in East, West, Southern Africa and overseas. In addition, Murua has also set up a Literary Podcast and YouTube Channel along the way with both aimed at giving African Writers a voice.
The George Floyd Protests and Black Lives Matter Movement
James Murua Literature Blog recently began reporting on writers of African descent globally. The death of George Floyd in May 2020 at the hands of a rogue, white police officer during his arrest not only sparked protests in the US and beyond condemning it but also a need to highlight black brilliance more than ever.
Indeed, there is a disturbing, minimal black presentation in the publishing industry in the US and a need for more reportage on the African diaspora literary scene. James Murua Literature Blog aims to curb this with their recent inclusion of the African diaspora in their reportage alongside African literary news from the continent.
Achievements
As a journalist, Murua was voted the Columnist of the Year in 2009 as a result of his contributions to The Star newspaper. Furthermore, he has contributed to a couple of media publications around Africa. In 2018, he was nominated for Best Creative Writing Blog by the Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE) Awards.
In that same year, he was announced as the Best Writer Theatre, Art & Culture at the Kenya’s Sanaa Theatre Awards and subsequently listed as one of the Top Men in Digital in Kenya. Murua has since conducted workshops on blogging and social media in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Malawi. He has also been a media consultant for the Goethe Institut, Nairobi.
