Ende Mai (26.5.-29.5.) ist es endlich wieder soweit: nach der Corona bedingten Unsicherheit im letzten Jahr, dem Ausfall 2020, steigt Europas größtes afrikanische Musik- und Kulturfestival, das International Africa Festival ganz regulär. Dann ziehen wieder tausende Besucher:innen in die Mainmetropole Würzburg. Die Mainwiesen verwandeln sich wieder an diesen speziellen, faszinierenden Ort, der wie kaum ein anderer für afrikanische Musik steht. Dieses Jahr stehen starke afrikanische Frauen im musikalischen Fokus.

Awa Ly (Senegal), Angélique Kidjo, (Benin) Lira (Südafrika), Lura (Kapverden) und Nkulee Dube (Südafrika) sind die weiblichen Headliner der Konzertabende. Aber auch andere, weniger bekannte Frauenacts sind dieses jahr zu erleben: Treesha (Deutschland/Kenya), Amir Kheir (Sudan) oder Fafa Ruffino aus dem Benin.

Weitere Highlights dieses Jahr sind Habib Koité (Mali), Patrice (D) oder Moh! Kouyaté aus Guinea, der extra für das Festival seine Guinée Music All Stars formiert hat.

Es war 2003, als ich das erste Mal in Würzburg beim Africa Festival war. Es war sehr heiß, es war sehr voll, es war umwerfend gut. Der Headliner des Abends damals war Alpha Blondy, es war der Hammer, was da im Zelt während des Konzerts abging. Diese Stimmung war auch bei vielen andren Konzerten im Laufe der Jahre ein Garant für den Erfolg des Festivals.

Das Africa Festival auf der Maininsel ist einzigartig. Seit 33 Jahren wird es nun veranstaltet, es ist immer noch unerreicht. Nicht weil es immer größer wurde, sondern weil es gleich gut geblieben ist.

Hitze, Regen, sogar Hochwasser haben dem Festival nichts anhaben können.

Das Programm ist nahezu unerreicht: was die Vielfalt, die Qualität und die einzigartige Mischung der Konzerte angeht. Doch es ist an den vier Tage spürbar, dass es für viele Musiker:innen ein Highlight ist, hier zu spielen. Dort, wo schon so viele bekannte Namen gespielt haben. Denn etwas unterscheidet das International Africa Festival von vielen Nachahmern; Würzburg ist nicht nur eine einzigartige Atmosphäre, fast alle Konzerte sind ausverkauft. Es ist ein besonderer, wahrhaftiger Ort der Kultur. Ein Ort, an dem das bloße musizieren und Geld verdienen nicht hingehört. Ein Ort, an dem afrikanische Kultur gelebt und gefördert wird. Die unterschiedlichen Projekte, Ausstellungen, Theaterstücke, Modeschauen, Filmvorführungen und Workshops haben eine lange Tradition dort und werden weit über die Region hinaus wahrgenommen.

Schon längst sind die meisten Konzerte fast ausverkauft. Dennoch lohnt es sich, auf das Festivalgelände zu kommen, der Musik zu lauschen, bei den Aktivitäten mit zu machen oder sich einfach nur treiben zu lassen. Wer es noch nicht erlebt hat, sollte dieses Jahr die Chance ergreifen. Afrikanische (Musik-)Kultur war noch nie so nah wie im Africa Festival in Würzburg.

At the end of May, the time has finally come again: after the Corona-related uncertainty last year, the cancellation in 2020, Europe’s largest African music and culture festival, the International Africa Festival, will take place on a regular basis. Once again, thousands of visitors will be drawn to the Main metropolis of Würzburg. The Main meadows will once again be transformed into this special, fascinating place that stands for African music like no other. This year, the musical focus will be on strong African women.
Awa Ly (Senegal), Angélique Kidjo, (Benin) Lira (South Africa), Lura (Cape Verde) and Nkulee Dube (South Africa) are the female headliners of the concert evenings. But other, lesser-known female acts can also be experienced this year: Treesha (Germany/Kenya), Amir Kheir (Sudan) or Fafa Ruffino from Benin.

It was 2003 when I was in Würzburg for the first time at the Africa Festival. It was very hot, it was very crowded, it was amazingly good. The headliner of the evening was Alpha Blondy, it was amazing what went on in the tent during the concert. This atmosphere has also been a guarantee for the success of the festival at many other concerts over the years.
The Africa Festival on the Main Island is unique. It has been held for 33 years now and is still unrivalled. Not because it has become bigger and bigger, but because it has remained the same.
Heat, rain, even floods have not harmed the festival.

The programme is almost unrivalled: in terms of variety, quality and the unique mix of concerts. But it is noticeable during the four days that it is a highlight for many musicians to play here. There, where so many well-known names have already played. Because something distinguishes the International Africa Festival from many imitators; Würzburg is not only a unique atmosphere, almost all concerts are sold out. It is a special, true place of culture. A place where merely making music and earning money does not belong. A place where African culture is lived and promoted. The various projects, exhibitions, plays, fashion shows, film screenings and workshops have a long tradition there and are noticed far beyond the region.

Most of the concerts have long been almost sold out. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to come to the festival site, listen to the music, take part in the activities or just let yourself drift. If you haven’t experienced it yet, you should take the chance this year. African (music) culture has never been so close as at the Africa Festival in Würzburg.
