Stage Set for Inaugural Independent Theatre Makers Awards//Bühnenstars glänzen bei den Independent Theatre Awards//by Tonderai Chiyindiko

“We saw a need for recognition of works that are independently produced and also to broaden the spectrum as we only have about two recognised theatre awards in the country, so it is to broaden the view for all works that may not make it to our national theatres and to (mostly) celebrate independent theatre makers” Mongezi Mabunda

Is there Anybody Out There? Nairobi Space Station – Kairos Futura Artist Project Starts this March_deutsch/englisch

They look like the futuristic Space Guerilla. From 18 March, they will make Kanairo unsafe. That is the Sheng name for Kenya's capital Nairobi. The venerable MacMillian Library in the centre will kick off the launch. It becomes a space station. They have camels with them with Massai blankets. The olive overalls are well tailored, the steel masks make them look martial. With this project, the Kairos Futura artists' group puts a big exclamation mark on Nairobi's Design Week. But it is not only about spectacle. The artists' collective, consisting of artists, designers, scientists and environmentalists, wants more: visions and proposals for an environmentally friendly Nairobi. It is about reclaiming urban space, about the "rewilding" of inner-city areas. They…

Africa and the Frankfurt Book Fair 2021 – Part 1 – Roundup and Interviews

    PSX 20211107 223254

After the almost complete standstill in 2020, this year there was a cautious approach to earlier times. There was hardly any crowding, many halls were very airy with stands. The usual crowds, the sheer abundance of stands were not there this time. After more than 300,00 visitors in 2019, there were now 70,000, including 35,000 mtrade visitors. It was very noticeable among the international publishers, some of whom stayed away or were there with a smaller presence or joint stands. Cultureafrica also visited and looked around at the African publishers and the publishers with African authors.
