HH: When I look at the pictures of the midgrooves series, I see less posing, more melancholy. Are you looking for these moments?

AM: I am definitely looking for them. I went in there with that being one of my intents. But generally when I make I draw from moments. Even with images I make of my own family, they are usually never posed.

HH: There are clubs where taking pictures is neither allowed nor announced. How do you manage to create this proximity, not to be seen as a disturbing factor.

AM: We live in a digital age and archiving is at the forefront. Whether one is archiving like I am or with their phone, everyone wants to have a memory of what happened last night. To keep and share later on Instagram and the like. So, personally, I have not encountered situations where I have been warned to stop making images in a club. Also, I think it has to do with the fact that I am often with an organizer of an event or documenting for them. And really the idea of MIDGROOVE came from wanting to make a different type of event photography.

HH: You only use black and white photography. Is this the classic approach for you, a special statement or does color simply distract you?

AM: Aesthetically the lighting situation in the club for me dictated I turn to black and white, and technically as well. I am not using a flash most times and my lens is not long. It is fixed. Allowing me to be patient when finding these moments. Classic approach definitely. I am not writing off color but right now I am enjoying black and white.

HH: The whole world is always taking pictures, often of itself. Has it become even more difficult to stand out from the crowd with sophisticated photos/series?

AM: At first, I used to worry about this but not so much anymore. I am confident in my voice and what I want to say and continue to say when making images. I am naturally a stronger series photographer than I am a single’s, and I am totally fine with that. I am storyteller first before I am a photographer.

HH: You are very involved in the Lgbtq+ culture in South Africa. Is “being different” more accepted or is there a threat situation like in many countries around the world?

AM: Being different is not accepted anywhere. Threat is always there. as a Queer person that is something I consciously live with everyday. Having to be cautious becomes second nature.

HH: Is the coronavirus the end of the club culture and how much are artists like you affected by the lockdown? Are there still exhibition possibilities?

AM: I doubt club culture will entirely fade as of yet. But definitely room for alternative initiatives has been opened up. Lockdown messed up everyone’s livelihood hood. I know for me jobs were very thin and few.
