In paying tribute to the hard but often overlooked work of East African artistes from the early 2000s in Dem Days, Lilian inevitably reminds us how long she has been in the industry and how much talent we have in the region. As a huge fan, I am looking forward to the music videos to these songs, hoping they are in the works, and possibly, a whole album from the artiste in the near future.

Barefoot in Germany – Interview with/mit Rwandan/German author Tete Loeper engl/ger
At the end of 2020, cultureafrica reported on the book Barefoot in Germany, which was published in English. It is written by the Rwandan-German author Tete Loeper. Tete Loeper herself grew up in Rwanda in the 1990s, spending time in Burundi and Congo during the genocide. In Rwanda, she worked in projects with girls at risk and also gathered information there for her later book. Barefoot in Germany is about the (fictional) life of the young Mutoni from Rwanda. Her dramatic life, which begins in the red-light district of Hamburg, soon turns to the southern German province of a small town. There she is met not only by helpfulness but also by a world of prejudice, complacency and ignorance.…

Africa and the Frankfurt Book Fair 2021 – Part 1 – Roundup and Interviews
After the almost complete standstill in 2020, this year there was a cautious approach to earlier times. There was hardly any crowding, many halls were very airy with stands. The usual crowds, the sheer abundance of stands were not there this time. After more than 300,00 visitors in 2019, there were now 70,000, including 35,000 mtrade visitors. It was very noticeable among the international publishers, some of whom stayed away or were there with a smaller presence or joint stands. Cultureafrica also visited and looked around at the African publishers and the publishers with African authors.

Barfuß in Deutschland ist das Belletristik-Debüt der Ruanda-Deutschen Tete Loeper, das am 30. Dezember 2020 als Taschenbuch erscheint. In der Ich-Form erzählt, folgt es der Geschichte der ruandischen Akademikerin Mutoni, dem Produkt einer unerlaubten Affäre, die in Nyamirambo , Kigali, in Armut aufwächst. Chancen auf eine Erwerbstätigkeit sind schwer zu bekommen und auch Absolventen wie sie werden nicht verschont. So ist Toni, wie sie von Freunden und Familie liebevoll genannt wird, gezwungen, in einem Straßenimbiss zu arbeiten. Nach dem Tod ihrer Mutter ist sie für sich und ihre jüngere Schwester Tendeza verantwortlich.

fast track feminism – learning feminism from rwanda
Vor einem Jahr berichtete ich über das Theaterprojekt Learning Feminism from Ruanda von Flinn Works. Die gepante Tournee im Spätherbst 2020 und Anfang 2021 fiel F den Corona Restriktionen zum Opfer. Theater wurden geschlossen. Doch das spektakuläre Stück is back. Mit zunächst Aufführungen in Freiburg und Hannover. Fast Track Feminism: 61 Prozent Frauenanteil im Parlament, mehrheitlich Frauen in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft: das ist nicht Skandinavien, sondern das kleine Ruanda in Ostafrika. Das ist neben Namibia eine Ausnahmestellung – auch in Afrika. In der Rangliste des Gender Gap, die angibt, wie groß der Abstand zum Mann in Punkto Gleichstellung ist (siehe Anhang) liegt Rwanda auch vor Deutschland.
