Stage Set for Inaugural Independent Theatre Makers Awards

With the South African theatre awards scene dominated by the Naledi Theatre Awards and the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards, for former for Gauteng and the latter for Western Cape, the 1^st Independent Theatre Makers Awards is a much needed alternative platform for the recognition of independent theatre work. The awards are the brainchild of actor Thato Vejah Moeng and the creative duo behind one of Gauteng’s most exciting independent theatre spaces, the TX Theatre in Tembisa, Mxolisi Masilela and Mongezi Mabunda.

Over the years the mainstream theatre awards have fallen short in terms of giving due recognition to the independent theatre scene and this is set to change from February 2024, when the first Independent Theatre Makers Awards shake up the landscape.

“We saw a need for recognition of works that are independently produced and also to broaden the spectrum as we only have about two recognised theatre awards in the country, so it is to broaden the view for all works that may not make it to our national theatres and to (mostly) celebrate independent theatre makers”, says Mabunda.

Some of the nominated thespians include the legendary actor and director Hamilton Dlamini as Best Director for the classic Woza Albert, Qondiswa James as Best Director for A Faint Patch Of Light, Kim Blance Adonis as Best Female Actor in Mike Van Graan’s My Fellow South Africans, Thulani Mtsweni for Best Male Actor in Woza Albert, Luyanda Sidiya as Best Choreographer for Umnikelo, Darlington Khoza for Best Solo Performance in Mshovara, Palesa Molefe as Best Lead in a Musical in Piennar The Musical and many others. There are also awards for Mandisi “Dr Disi” Sindo who receives the Best Community Builder Award for his years of work in developing the Shack Theatres concept and a well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award being awarded to legendary actor and director Lucky “Professor” Kgafela, an alumni of the legendary Funda Art Centre in Soweto.

 

These new awards should go a long way in ensuring that recognition is finally given to the fringe and alternative theatre makers who mostly work in non-government funded spaces where unsurprisingly some of the most exciting and boundary-breaking theatre is taking place. The inaugural awards are curated by an all-women team comprised of Itumeleng Moeketsi, Tshepiso Sarelwa and Itumeleng Faith Thobejane.

 

For Mabunda and his team behind the awards, the hope is that “these awards would shine light on the hidden stars of independent theatre making and to continue honoring creatives known and unknown”.

The 1^st Independent Theatre Makers Awards are funded by the National Arts Council together with other independent sponsors.

Im Laufe der Jahre haben die etablierten Theaterpreise die unabhängige Theaterszene nicht ausreichend gewürdigt. Das soll sich ab Februar 2024 ändern, wenn die ersten Independent Theatre Makers Awards die Landschaft aufmischen.

“Wir sahen die Notwendigkeit, unabhängig produzierte Werke anzuerkennen und das Spektrum zu erweitern, da es in unserem Land nur zwei anerkannte Theaterpreise gibt. Es geht also darum, den Blick für alle Werke zu erweitern, die es vielleicht nicht in unsere nationalen Theater schaffen, und (vor allem) unabhängige Theatermacher zu feiern”, sagt Mabunda.

Zu den nominierten Schauspielern gehören der legendäre Schauspieler und Regisseur Hamilton Dlamini als bester Regisseur für den Klassiker Woza Albert, Qondiswa James als bester Regisseur für A Faint Patch Of Light, Kim Blance Adonis als bester weiblicher Darsteller in Mike Van Graans My Fellow South Africans, Thulani Mtsweni als bester männlicher Darsteller in Woza Albert, Luyanda Sidiya als bester Choreograf für Umnikelo, Darlington Khoza für die beste Solodarbietung in Mshovara, Palesa Molefe als beste Hauptdarstellerin in einem Musical in Piennar The Musical und viele andere. Außerdem gibt es Auszeichnungen für Mandisi “Dr. Disi” Sindo, der für seine jahrelange Arbeit bei der Entwicklung des Shack Theatres-Konzepts mit dem Best Community Builder Award geehrt wird, und für den legendären Schauspieler und Regisseur Lucky “Professor” Kgafela, einen Absolventen des legendären Funda Art Centre in Soweto, der den wohlverdienten Lifetime Achievement Award erhält.

Diese neuen Preise sollen dazu beitragen, dass endlich auch Randgruppen und alternative Theatermacher anerkannt werden, die zumeist in nicht von der Regierung finanzierten Räumen arbeiten, in denen – was nicht überrascht – einige der aufregendsten und grenzüberschreitendsten Theater aufgeführt werden. Die ersten Preise werden von einem reinen Frauenteam kuratiert, bestehend aus Itumeleng Moeketsi, Tshepiso Sarelwa und Itumeleng Faith Thobejane.

Für Mabunda und sein Team, das hinter den Preisen steht, besteht die Hoffnung, dass “diese Preise die verborgenen Stars des unabhängigen Theatermachens ans Licht bringen und bekannte und unbekannte Kreative weiterhin ehren”.

Die 1st Independent Theatre Makers Awards werden vom National Arts Council zusammen mit anderen unabhängigen Sponsoren finanziert.
